Rhythm

Rhythm: The emotional tension in the play develops during the interrogation scenes. This is where the most tension is present. Katurian’s short stories break the tension of the scenes to offer some differentiation. The patterns I’ve noticed in the play are that that there’s a slow build towards high tension then it just drops. It continues this pattern through out the play. The short stories are a little different. The short stories stay the same pace but towards the end of each story is a twist. This pattern makes it very unpredictable. The Little Jesus story has a different pace then the others. It starts off innocent then stays high tension through out the rest of the story. The story then drops at the end leaving it unanswered. The pace of this is what makes the rest of the stories stand out so much. The audience reacts a different way to this story then the others because the audience is assuming this is what has happened to the missing girl. With the collection of these rhythms, it contributes to the rest of the play by adding unpredictability and keeping the audience engaged.

The rhythm with the design would follow the same pattern. With slow builds, the lights would increase in brightness as sound would increase in volume. When the tension would end, so would the sound and the lights. The design would follow the same formula as the dialogue.
