The main idea of the play is wanting answers. The short stories leave a question at each of the story which makes the reader think "What was the purpose of that?" The entire play is based around this idea of finding answers.
The significance of the play’s title pertains to a character in one of Katurian’s short stories entitled “The Pillowman.” The short story tells of a 9 ft tall man made out of pink pillows who convinces children to commit suicide to prevent the horrible lives they are destined to live. As time goes on, the Pillowman becomes depressed over the life he has lived and travels back in time to when he was a child. The Pillowman kills the child and himself.
The story is a common thread with all of the characters. Ariel killed his dad with a pillow, Katurian killed his parents and Michal with a pillow. When Katurian suffocated Michal, he was preventing Michal from living a painful life of torture and isolation in prison. In this instance, Katurian could be considered to be the Pillowman in that scene.
